The guys found themselves spending considerably more time in hotel rooms, surrounded by high security. Was this the life that these five young men had envisioned for themselves? Why did the fans react to the band in such an outrageous way ? What was it about these guys that made the girls so crazy? If they were so enamored with these guys, why would they endanger their lives in this way? |

Example England 1975 TV Show in London. It was to be a huge event. Shown to American audiences it was to be broadcast at 1:30 AM, via Satellite. While 30 million viewers sat watching TV…Mayhem was breaking out in the London TV studio Half an hour before the show was to start, four hundred invited Roller fans turned the London TV Studio into a madhouse. Pandemonium ensued. Security people were kept extremely busy trying to control the crowds and keep people in their seats.When the Rollers came on the stage at 1:43 am, they were greeted with overwhelming applause. During the first three songs the audience was quite controlled. At the start of Bye Bye Baby Les ventured close to the crowd, blew kisses and that’s when it all started. In my opinion that was a big mistake, my lovely Les. Twenty-five girls rushed towards Les, threw him to the ground and piled on top of each other That was the signal for the other fans. Dodging the security men they went after the guys. Derek, Alan and Eric were able to escape to their dressing room, but Les and Woody were not so fortunate. When the security men finally got order restored, they found, Woody and Les lying on the ground, unconscious. They were immediately brought to a hospital and thankfully a half hour later they were fine, though still quite shaken. Afterwards it was discovered that not only had the fans destroyed many instruments, but the television crew had incurred enormous damages to their equipment. Three cameras were destroyed, chairs broken and the stage sustained major damage. Many technicians and camera operators suffered . injuries. Riots like this didn’t even happen with the Beatles. At a special news conference the next day it was announced that Roller fans would no longer be permitted into the studio. In addition, future television performances would only take place in tightly secured studios at secret times. Les said at the time: "It isn't possibly for us to have a tour of England at the moment. The fans are so aggressive that even during our private time we need to have bodyguards. We will therefore tour Germany first and hope that the same thing doesn’t happen there |

My thoughts: Years ago when I read all the articles I often wondered if because I didn’t participate in the hysteria…was I still a ‘real’ Roller fan ? I couldn't understand all the craziness and wondered how much the fans really got out of the concerts since all they did was scream. Naturally, I too, found myself adoring with these handsome young men and their music, but did so without the tartan pants and screaming! I enjoyed listening to their music in a quiet atmosphere while gazing at their pictures on my wall. If I had ever been given an opportunity to meet them I think I would have blushed uncontrollably? So what defines a real fan? I still don’t know !!! It’s not just Roller fans that can be so fanatic…I’ve seen it before. There fans that worship their idols to the point where it’s not just harmless adulation. Jealousy and hate between the fans and music lovers is very common Wouldn’t it be much nicer to meet your idol in a relaxed environment rather than a forced situation? Let us remember the Beatles. They suffered under the same type of stress resulting from their extreme popularity Years later we can look at the Backstreet Boys. Sometimes people would compare them to the Bay City Rollers and their fans. The mass hysteria that followed them caused the band to nearly collapse. Is this what some fans really want? I still see it happening today - over twenty years later. Little has changed with some female fans They still follow their idols around without any regard to the consequences, However, as I said before, perhaps there is something that I just don’t understand about being a ‘fan’ !!!

Ein Beispiel : England 1975 TV Show in London. Es sollte ein ganz grosses Ding werden. Nachts um halb zwei sollte die Show per Satellit nach Amerika übertragen werden. Während in den USA bald 30 Millionen Zuschauer vor ihren Fernseher sitzen ,ist in London der Teufel los. Schon eine halbe Stunde vor der Show verwandelten 400 eingeladene Roller-Fans das Studio in einen Hexenkessel. Die Sicherheits Leute hatten alle Hände voll zu tun , die Fans auf ihren Sitzen zu halten. Als dann um 1.43 Uhr die Rollers auf die Bühne kamen, wurden sie mit einem ohrenbetäubenden Beifall begrüsst. Bei den ersten drei Songs konnten sich die Fans noch zurück halten. Bei "Bye bye Baby" passierte es dann, Les wagte sich zu weit in die Nähe der Fans und warf ihnen Handküsse entgegen. Das war zuviel und ein arger Fehler mein lieber Les !!! 25 Mädchen stürzten sich auf ihn , warfen ihn zu Boden und begruben ihn unter sich. Das war das Start Zeichen für die anderen Fans. Sie überrannten die Ordner und stürzten sich auf die anderen Rollers. Derek, Alan und Eric schafften es noch in die Garderobe. Als die Ordner die Meute endlich zurück gedrängt hatten , lagen Woody und Les Ohnmächtig am Boden und mussten in ein Krankenhaus gebracht werden. Sie waren eine halbe Stunde später wieder okay aber es blieb ein Schock. Die Fans hatten sämtliche Instrumente zertrümmert aber den grössten Schaden hatten die Fernsehleute. Drei Kameras waren demoliert , sämtliche Stühle Kleinholz und die Bühne durchgetreten. Mehrere Kameraleute und Techniker waren verletzt. Solche Ausschreitungen passierten nicht mal bei den Beatles. Bei einer Sonderkonferenz am anderen Tag wurde beschlossen das in Zukunft kein Rollers Fan mehr die Studios betreten darf. Die Rollers durften nur noch in hermetisch abgeriegelten Studios und zu geheimen Zeiten auftreten. Les meinte damals : Im Moment in England auf Tournee zu gehen wäre für uns Selbstmord. Die Übergriffe der Fans sind so stark das wir sogar im Privatleben ständig Leibwächter dabei haben müssen. Deshalb gehen wir erst nach Deutschland und hoffen das uns dort nicht das gleiche passiert."

Eigene Gedanken dazu Als ich dieses und anderes damals lass, dachte ich oft ,ob ich vielleicht kein richtiger Rollers Fan sei. Ich konnte das alles nicht verstehen und dachte manchmal nur, die haben ja nichts von der Musik mitbekommen wenn die nur geschrieen haben. Klar auch ich schwärmte für diese hübschen jungen Männer und ihre Musik. Auch ohne Karo Hosen und Geschrei !!! Es langte mir wenn ich in ruhigen Momenten ihre Musik hörte oder ihre Bilder anzuschauen an meiner Wand oder in Magazinen. Wenn ich sie getroffen hätte, hätte ich doch nur rote Wangen und Ohren bekommen. . Aber was ist ein richtiger Fan? Ich weiss es bis heute noch nicht !! Aber nicht nur Roller Fans können fanatisch sein das habe ich schon oft genug bemerkt. Es gibt Fans die auf ganz andere Art und Weise ihre Idole verehren und verteidigen und das nicht immer auf harmlose und Gefahrlose art. Eifersucht und Hass gegenüber anderen Fans oder Musik Liebhabern sind dabei nicht selten. Ist es nicht viel schöner seinem Idol im ruhigen gegenüber zu stehen als ihn zu bedrängen oder gar zu bedrohen ? Erinnern wir uns doch nur noch ganz kurz an die Beatles. Schon sie litten an den Folgen ihrer Beliebtheit bei der Weiblichkeit. Oder die BackstreetBoys , viele Jahre später. Man verglich sie schon manchmal mit den Rollers und ihren Fans. Auch sie gingen daran fast zu Grunde. Ist es das was manche Fans wollen? Ich beobachte es sogar noch heute, über 20 Jahre später, das sich bei manchen (weiblichen) Fans noch nicht viel geändert hat. Sie folgen noch heute ihren Idolen , egal mit welchen Folgen Aber ich sag ja, vielleicht versteh auch ich unter "Fan-sein" etwas falsch !!!!
